PTI Gate

By: Baiza Mehdi, Uploaded: 22nd June 2012

PTI Gate
‘Justice, humanity and self esteem’ is the proud slogan of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf. However, this very image of PTI has been under constant attack with severe criticisms from other party bodies functioning in Pakistan since its magnanimous fame after October 30 2011 gathering at the Minar-e-Pakistan, Lahore. The party did something in where its rivals have failed; to magnetize the elite and educated class of Pakistani society, mostly comprising the youth, even the media, which is always so hard or skeptic towards the political parties are united in supporting the PTI vision for Pakistan.
It is to no surprise that since PTI is now popular among the masses will be in the limelight, especially when the elections are so close; the latest attraction being the ‘anchors-gate or media-gate scandal’ that has created much buzz. Even as the scandal made airwaves against top journalists of Pakistan, it also targeted or at least tried to, libel PTI’s name by media indicting that the party supporters were involved in constructing and distributing the list of alleged journalists who have been bribed by Malik Riaz. The list appeared on the social network; twitter on the 7th of June under a fake account of ‘Aitzaz Ahsan’where the tweeter published a list without mentioning the source of the list stating that they are not sure whether it is authentic or not and would not be surprised if it was true. This led to several re-tweets by independent users which were later published in stylized Bahria Town page format on YouTube and elsewhere. The tweeter Aitzaz Ahsan published list of 8 journalists initially and by 13 th published altogether 19 names of journalists and by 14th June the fake id was suspended. This marked rage and fury among the civilians and the media personals.

The problem with cyber stalking is that it is relatively easy to get away with crime with availability of web 2.0 technologies that enable people to adopt pseudonyms and anonymous status. At one time news or views are shared rapidly hence, creating mob on the internet. This is exactly what has happened in the case of media-gate scandal. Despite the false accusations on PTI by media sources, the PTI supporters came out in large number in clearing the party’s name including the well renowned journalist Dr. Shahid Masood, whose name too appears in the mentioned scandal, he, posted on facebook page that PTI did not participate in this act. The question is why PTI would take risks of indulging in such scandals where its top media supporters and well-wishers are on the list, including Hasan Nisar and Mubashir Lucman to name few. Especially now the elections are nearing and PTI needs media support in creating good image? Also, none of PTI pages on web contains any malicious information or material against any political, media or organization personal.

It is highly commendable that PTI social media and supporters group operate in an organized and well versed manner so much so that despite frequent name callings and accusations , they have shown tolerance depicting the righteous claim of humanity and self esteem in their slogan. Moreover, these groups have more than 5 million facebook members from Pakistan and worldwide more than 2 million PTI supporters. The social media web of PTI works under the Central Secretary Social media whose status will be equal to the Central Secretary Information of the party as outlined in the party constitution. This further exhibits the transparency and responsibility with which the party is willing to perform. Other parties should also learn from this example and practice justice, humanity and self esteem for prosperous Pakistan.
